The Emirates News Agency opens up to the Spanish-speaking World

It has started a service in the Spanish language that will address both the resident community in the Gulf and the rest of the World

Over the last few years, the United Arab Emirates has made a consistent effort to develop its political and economic relations with the Spanish-speaking world. This is reflected in the growth of its diplomatic outreach into Central, South America and Spain and in the growing number of visits to the UAE by official delegations as well as businessmen from the region.

At the same time, reflecting this expanding relationship, the number of companies from Central, South America and Spain with a presence in the UAE has also grown, matched by an increase in the number of Spanish speakers living in the Arabian Gulf.

Recognising these developments, the official Emirates News Agency, WAM, has taken a decision to reach out, both to the region and to Spanish language speakers in the UAE and the Gulf, by launching a special Spanish language service. Devoting attention both to key items of news from the Emirates and to stories which are likely to be of particular interest to readers in Spain and in Central and South America, the Spanish language service started operating in September 2017, along with services in five other languages. Several others have subsequently been added.

WAM publishes news on many topics such as politics, economy, culture, environment, religious tolerance or international humanitarian assistance

Since then, over 3,000 news stories have been transmitted on WAM’s Spanish service, covering a wide range of topics, from politics to economics, culture to the environment, religious tolerance to international humanitarian assistance.

In 2019, WAM will continue to work to bring news of the UAE and of its achievements to Spanish speakers in the UAE, the Gulf and beyond.
