Es un placer felicitar a EL CORREO DEL GOLFO por otro año más publicando con éxito en la región del Golfo. Este éxito es el legado no sólo del equipo preparado de EL CORREO DEL GOLFO, sino también de la creciente actividad de los hispanohablantes en la región del Golfo y de los crecientes lazos entre los países del Consejo de Cooperación del Golfo (CCG) y el mundo hispano.
Las fuertes relaciones de las que disfrutan los Emiratos Árabes Unidos con los países hispanos siguen incrementándose en profundidad y amplitud. Hoy, más de 200 empresas españolas han establecido sus sedes regionales en los EAU, y más de 230 empresas hispanoamericanas tienen presencia en los EAU. Mientras tanto, más de 25.000 personas de Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, la República Dominicana, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guinea Ecuatorial, Guatemala, Honduras, México, Nicaragua, Panamá, Paraguay, Perú, España, Uruguay y Venezuela residen en los EAU.

Los EAU son el segundo mercado más grande para las empresas españolas en la región, y las exportaciones de España a los EAU se incrementaron un 12,9 por ciento en 2017. América Latina también está aprovechando la posición de los EAU como centro principal de distribución, reconociendo nuestra capacidad de servir como puente entre bienes, servicios, personas e ideas de Latinoamérica, Europa, Oriente Medio, Asia, India y África. América Latina tiene un enorme potencial para incrementar su comercio en la esfera internacional, y la expansión actual de la DP World de los EAU en Perú y Ecuador va a apoyar las exportaciones de la región, además de permitir a Latinoamérica que utilice los EAU como trampolín a los principales mercados internacionales.
Reconociendo las muchas oportunidades potenciales de comercio e inversión en Latinoamérica, la Cámara de Industria y Comercio de Dubai también está planeando establecer oficinas en Argentina y ya la ha abierto en Panamá. Mientras tanto, el Centro Multirrecursos de Dubai está buscando incrementar el comercio de Dubai con Latinoamérica del 3 por ciento en 2018 a un 6 por ciento en tres años, y a cifras de dos dígitos para 2022. Los EAU pretenden seguir extendiendo su cooperación con Latinoamérica a través de amplios aspectos, desde las energías renovables, salud, educación, transporte, aeronáutica, tecnología e innovación hasta turismo, logística, infraestructura y agricultura.

Estoy seguro de nuestra capacidad para seguir extendiendo lazos en todos estos campos además de los ya existentes en la cultura, debido especialmente al contacto directo frecuente que los EAU mantienen con nuestros socios hispanos en todos los niveles. He tenido el placer de encontrarme con Su Majestad el Rey de España en enero de 2018, además de, también a comienzos de ese año, con el presidente de Panamá y con los presidentes de Argentina y Colombia, en 2017, y con mis homólogos hispanohablantes en meses recientes. Comités bilaterales conjuntos, delegaciones de empresa y eventos como el Foro Global de Negocios de Latinoamérica, que se celebra en Dubai, también son vitales para reforzar los lazos entre los EAU y el mundo hispano.
Los EAU están encantados de tener cinco vuelos directos diarios de Abu Dhabi y Dubai a Barcelona y Madrid, un gran contraste con los cuatro vuelos semanales a España que operaban en 2012. Más vuelos directos han comenzado a finales de este año, mientras que los EAU también están aumentando su red aérea en Latinoamérica, con propuestas de vuelos directos actualmente en fase de proyecto.

Esto no sólo continuará acercando a nuestros países y regiones, sino que también facilitará un mayor papel de los hispanohablantes en la región. La Expo de Dubai en 2020 también presenta una oportunidad excepcional para el mundo hispano de mostrar sus muy impresionantes innovaciones e industrias al mundo, además de proyectar elementos clave de la cultura y lengua españolas a los EAU e internacionalmente. Los EAU dieron prueba de ello a comienzos de 2018, cuando la Compañía Nacional de Danza de España condujo espectáculos geniales de Don Quijote durante el Festival de Abu Dhabi.
Las relaciones de los EAU con los países hispanohablantes son de gran valor, y son lazos que buscamos seguir cultivando. Estamos ansiosos de ver logros más amplios de España y Latinoamérica representados fuertemente en la Expo de 2020, y de ver el florecimiento de los lazos entre nuestras regiones. Por último, aunque no menos importante, me gustaría agradecer a EL CORREO DEL GOLFO por su papel notable al reflejar el éxito de los hispanohablantes en la región, y no tengo duda de que habrá un número imparable y creciente de historias en esta publicación que circulen sobre los logros notables por parte de los ciudadanos del mundo hispano en el CCG en los próximos años.

It is my pleasure to congratulate EL CORREO DEL GOLFO on yet another successful year publishing in the Gulf region. This success is testament not only to EL CORREO DEL GOLFO’s skilled team, but to the growing activity of Spanish speakers in the Gulf region and growing ties between the GCC and the Hispanic world.
The strong relations that the UAE enjoys with Hispanic countries only continue to increase in depth and breadth. Today, over 200 Spanish enterprises have established their regional headquarters in the UAE, and over 230 Hispanic American companies have a presence in the UAE. Meanwhile, more than 25,000 people from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela reside in the UAE.

The UAE is the second-largest market for Spanish companies in the region, and Spain’s exports to the UAE increased by 12.9 percent in 2017. Latin America is also taking greater advantage of the UAE’s position as a major distribution hub, recognizing our ability to serve as a bridge between goods, services, people and ideas from Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, India and Africa. Latin America has enormous potential to grow its trade on the global stage, and the current expansion of the UAE’s DP World in Peru and Ecuador will support exports from the region, and better enable Latin America to utilize the UAE as a launchpad to major international markets.
Recognizing the many potential trade and investment opportunities in Latin America, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry is also planning to establish offices in Argentina and it has already opened in Panama. Meanwhile, the Dubai Multi Commodities Center is seeking to increase Dubai’s trade with Latin America from 3 percent in 2018 to 6 percent within three years, and into double digits by 2022. The UAE looks forward to further expanding cooperation with Latin America across a broad range of fields, from renewable energy, health, education, transport, aerospace, technology and innovation to tourism, logistics, infrastructure, and agriculture.

I am confident in our ability to continue expanding ties in all of these fields in addition to our cultural ties, particularly given the frequent direct contact the UAE and our Hispanic partners maintain at all levels. I recently had the pleasure of meeting with His Highness the King of Spain in January 2018, as well as the President of Panama earlier last year, the Presidents of Argentina and Colombia in 2017, and my Spanish-speaking counterparts in recent months. Bilateral joint committees, business delegations and events such as the Global Business Forum Latin America, which is held in Dubai, are also vital to boosting ties between the UAE and the Hispanic world.
The UAE is pleased to have five direct flights per day from Abu Dhabi and Dubai to both Barcelona and Madrid, a huge contrast to the four weekly flights to Spain that operated in 2012. More direct flights began at the end of last year, while the UAE is also growing its flight network in Latin America, with proposals for direct flights currently in process.

Not only will this continue to bring our countries and regions closer together, but it will further facilitate a greater role for Spanish-speakers in the region. Dubai Expo 2020 also presents an outstanding opportunity for the Hispanic world to showcase its many impressive innovations and industries to the world, and to project core elements of Spanish culture and language to the UAE and internationally. The UAE received a taste of this at the beginning of 2018, when Spain’s Compañía Nacional de Danza’s conducted mesmerizing performances of Don Quixote during the Abu Dhabi Festival.
The UAE’s relations with Spanish-speaking countries are of great value, and are ties that we seek to further cultivate. We very much look forward to seeing the broader achievements of Spain and Latin American countries showcased through a strong presence at Expo 2020, and to seeing ties between our regions continuing to flourish. Last but not least, I would like to thank EL CORREO DEL GOLFO for its notable role in reflecting the successes of Spanish-speakers in the region, and I have no doubt that there will be an ever-increasing number of stories for this publication to circulate about the remarkable achievements of people from the Hispanic world in the GCC over the coming years.
