"In the wake of the pandemic, Expo 2020 will highlight the power of humanity and how we can collectively create positive change”

Her Excellency Reem Ebrahim Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General of Expo 2020 Dubai, highlights the participation of Hispanic countries in the universal exhibition and the importance of teamwork at the global level to overcome new challenges in post-pandemic times: "Our strength lies in uniting, and that is precisely why Expo 2020, as a platform for international collaboration, is more necessary now than ever”

Her Excellency Reem Ebra-him Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates and Director General of Expo 2020 Dubai, addresses the World Expo role as a forum for a global debate on the future of the world after the pandemic, in an interview with EL CORREO DEL GOLFO. She also refers to the participation of Hispanic countries and what it means to lead the most important event in the Arab world, as part of the legacy of the country's founding father, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who believed in the empowerment of women as an integral part of the nation's development.

How has the response been from the Latin American/Hispanic countries with regard to their participation at Expo 2020?

Expo 2020 has enjoyed a collaborative relationship with Latin American and Spanish-speaking countries, reflective of the strong ties they have with the UAE. While 2020 has brought with it unprecedented challenges, it has also shown us just what can be accomplished when we look beyond our borders and join forces to achieve a common goal. Our strength is in coming together, and this is precisely why Expo 2020, as a platform for international collaboration, is needed now more than ever. Expo 2020 is an essential tool that will help countries navigate through the pandemic and address other critical global challenges. It is also a catalyst for economic growth, offering an extraordinary opportunity for the global tourism industry, and our comprehensive and far-reaching business programme will encourage and enable individuals and organisations to forge new partnerships and agreements, secure investments and build presence in new markets. Despite the challenging situation due to the pandemic, we continue to work closely with our friends in Latin America and all participating nations to ensure excellent representation in Expo 2020. Together, we can ensure greater prosperity for future generations.

What are the most important initiatives that Latin America brings to Expo 2020?

Expo 2020 is a global platform dedicated to bringing people, communities and nations together to build bridges, enable action and inspire solutions toward some of the world’s greatest challenges, and I look forward to seeing the incredible perspective Latin America will offer through its initiatives – whether that be the region’s ongoing efforts to support SMEs, its continuous strive for innovation in sectors such as agriculture, aeronautics and eco-tourism, or its universally recognised gastronomy. Boasting a highly educated and experienced population of more than 500 million people, Latin America is a robust producer with strong exporting capabilities and a reliable workforce. The region’s vast potential, its readiness to navigate new and emerging industries, and its rich, diverse and innovative manpower continues to attract large, international companies seeking investment opportunities, and I anticipate the same keen interest will be witnessed during Expo 2020.Latin America is also known for its important and diverse natural reserves – reserves that must be protected against the adverse effects of climate change. Latin American countries have risen to the challenge remarkably and visitors will benefit from hearing about their experience and success stories, including innovations in renewable energy. Finally, as is the case in many other parts of the world, Latin America’s substantial tourism industry is a vital economic contributor. We hope that Expo 2020 will be a platform through which countries can attract foreign direct investment, as well as encourage the exploration of new air routes, which will support the global tourism sector and enhance international connectivity. Above all, Latin American countries are each diverse in their own right, with their own incredible history and cultures and unique investment and economic prospects. We are confident that countries and companies from the region will seize the opportunity offered by Expo 2020 and Dubai to engage with the world, further positioning themselves internationally in the MEASA region and beyond.

"Latin American countries are each diverse in their own right, with their incredible history and cultures and unique economic and investment prospects"

What have been some of the challenges faced by Expo 2020 in its preparations to receive millions of people post-pandemic?

In spite of the many challenges caused by the global pandemic, we are on track to open on 1 October 2021. All permanent Expo-led construction was completed in 2019, the Expo Entry Portals were unveiled in February 2020 and the successful inauguration of the Expo Metro station has been concluded. Throughout 2020, work focused on landscaping around the Expo site, while International Participants continue construction of their pavilions. The final touches and enhancements to the site will be completed closer to the start of Expo 2020, to ensure they remain fresh for the opening. Ensuring the safety and wellness of our workforce, our participants and our visitors, before and during Expo continues to remain our highest priority. Like any responsible organisation, we are carefully reviewing the implications of the pandemic on Expo 2020, working with relevant authorities, participants and contractors to ensure all guidelines and regulations are adhered to. This collaborative approach ensures that we harness considerable experience and expertise in safeguarding the health, safety and security of people and facilities during events of this scale and size, supported by international best practices. Above all, flexibility is key, and our approach to all decisions is guided by prudence and with a view to fulfilling our purpose. With only months to go now until Expo 2020 opens its doors, we continue to prepare and are on track to host an exceptional World Expo that amazes, entertains and inspires people by showcasing the best examples of collaboration, innovation and cooperation from around the world.

As the world continues to overcome this crisis, Expo 2020 brings a sense of hope, optimism and collaboration. What message of strength would you share with the world right now?

Humanity is witnessing a historic transformation with seismic shifts in preferences and consumption, a new era of transportation, energy, technology, finance and sustainable development, and the ongoing fourth industrial revolution. Meanwhile, our progress in many areas related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – a global plan of action to eradicate poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, creating a better future for all humanity by 2030 – has been affected by the outbreak of COVID-19. But if 2020 was the year that humanity grappled with such complexities, then 2021 must be a year of unprecedented and universal acceleration towards finding solutions. With less than a decade left to achieve the SDGs, Expo 2020’s timing is crucial. Our theme of Connecting Minds, Creating the Future is more relevant than ever, and our subthemes of Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability are reaffirmed as critical drivers of progress and prosperity for people and planet. For six months, we will welcome millions of visitors from around the world, plus more than 200 participants – including countries, companies, international organisations and educational institutions – gathering some of the world’s most intelligent and inquisitive minds to help solve the aforementioned challenges. Our work has already started. For example, Expo 2020’s partnership with DP World and the Zoological Society of London will help drive meaningful, global action around animal and habitat conservation to help safeguard our planet. In a spirit of innovation and optimism, we will present new ideas that will help shape a brighter post-pandemic future, not only for the UAE, but also for communities across the world.

"Our young nation has women in senior decision-making positions that have a direct impact on the educational, political, social and economic sectors of the UAE"

It is said that from every crisis, an opportunity arises. What do you think is the most important opportunity that has arisen for the countries participating in the Expo after this difficult year?

In the wake of the pandemic, Expo 2020 will highlight the power of humanity, and how we can collectively create positive change. While COVID-19 may have imposed involuntary isolation on cities and countries around the world, it is collaboration that will help us soar beyond it. As the first mega-event to take place since the pandemic began, Expo 2020 will bring nations, organisations and the private sector together to collaborate at a time when it is essential to do so – not only to reflect upon how our world has been altered, but also to position the future and tackle climate change, the SDGs, and other urgent priorities. By harnessing the sense of togetherness, ingenuity and compassion born out of this pandemic, I have no doubt that we will move forward, taking decisive action that will protect our planet, and all the life it sustains, for generations to come.

What are the UAE’s main expectations after the successful conclusion of Expo 2020?

The long-term legacy of Expo 2020 has been at the heart of our planning since the very beginning, and our plans are in line with the UAE’s commitment to transition towards a diversified, knowledge-based economy. After Expo 2020 closes its doors, the site will transform into District 2020, a blueprint for the human-centric, smart and sustainable cities of the future, located at the heart of Dubai’s growth corridor. An innovation ecosystem, District 2020 will bolster industry and technology growth in the region. Alongside a wealth of residential and commercial space, it will be home to world-class innovation, educational, cultural and entertainment facilities. Our iconic buildings will also live on – the Sustainability Pavilion will become a Science Centre, while Al Wasl Plaza, the Mobility Pavilion and Dubai Exhibition Centre will remain as permanent fixtures. Meanwhile, a number of Expo’s Official Premier Partners have already confirmed they will become District 2020 tenants. For example, Siemens will establish its global headquarters for airports, cargo and ports logistics at the site, while DP World is planning a logistics training centre in District 2020. Terminus Technologies will also set up a research and development centre and its first headquarters outside of China. Expo 2020 will serve as a pertinent opportunity to celebrate the UAE’s achievements, showcase future aspirations and kick-start another 50 years of purposeful progress, contributing to the nation’s continued prosperity and enabling growth in the region and beyond.

"In a spirit of innovation and optimism, we will present new ideas that will help shape a brighter post-pandemic future, not only for the UAE but also for communities around the world"

As Expo 2020 Dubai is one of the most important events in the Arab world and with Your Excellency leading it, we feel this is a powerful example of female empowerment. Can you tell us what this important role means to you personally?

With Expo 2020 Dubai coinciding with the UAE’s Golden Jubilee, I am reminded of our country’s Founding Father, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who believed that empowering women was integral to national development. We owe everything to him and to the Mother of the Nation, Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, who helped instill Sheikh Zayed’s vision into the social fabric of UAE society, leading to the finest examples of what Emirati women can strive for and achieve. I am grateful to our wise leadership for carrying out this vision, so that our young nation now has women in senior decision-making positions that have a direct impact on the UAE’s education, political, social and economic sectors. The UAE is ranked as a leading country in gender equality in the region, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2020. This achievement comes from the fundamental belief that women and men are equal partners in society. For example, the UAE has been ranked number one in the world when it comes to female representation in parliament, with women making up 50 per cent of the 40-member Federal National Council. Women also make up more than 60 per cent of public-sector workers – one of the highest proportions worldwide – a third of whom are in leadership roles. Expo 2020 is fully behind the UAE’s vision to empower women, not only within Expo itself, where we have more than 600 female employees – of which 200 are Emirati women – but also within our programmes that seek to find solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges. As our opening day approaches on 1 October 2021, I continue to be inspired by the incredible community of women around me, who are not only executives and professionals, but also mothers, caregivers, sisters and much more. I am privileged to lead our team and to be entrusted with bringing to life the first World Expo in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region. In doing so, we will build on the UAE’s legacy, and in the same year that we celebrate our nation’s Golden Jubilee, inaugurate another remarkable 50 years of history, creating a more prosperous future for women, our country and the whole world.

What message would you like to convey to women, with great ambitions and desire to advance?

I have been blessed to be part of a nation where, despite remarkable progress in women’s empowerment, there is no sense of settling or slowing down, and I echo this sentiment to girls and women everywhere. While you must celebrate every victory, you must also always look to your future and help others rise. Our road has not been easy, and we must not be deterred when faced with obstacles. By remaining determined and ambitious, and by aiming for the highest level of integrity, we can create a better world for our people and our planet. Our theme of 'Connecting Minds, Creating the Future' clearly reflects our vision for a more sustainable future for our planet and our belief that progress is the result of people from different fields and backgrounds, who would not normally collaborate, coming together in new and unique ways. When ambitious minds come together, we can inspire new ideas to build bridges, enable action and inspire solutions towards some of our biggest challenges.
