El sonido de violines y guitarras eléctricas se fueron silenciando. Mientras, apareció en el suelo la imagen de una llama de fuego enorme, que, de inmediato, transformó el ambiente del lugar. Millones de espectadores fueron transportados al “lejano Medio Oriente”, al tiempo que en la oscuridad aparecía Shakira interpretando ‘Ojos así’, una de las canciones más icónicas de su carrera. La gran estrella internacional movía su vientre y sus caderas al compás de los sonidos fusionados del sutar, la darbuka, el laúd y otros instrumentos característicos de los ritmos árabes, que la colombiana incluyó en el ‘show’ de la Súper Bowl 2020, como un grito simbólico de unidad entre oriente y occidente.
Ese día de febrero, en el año que nadie olvidará, la cantante colombiana llegó a la que muchos artistas consideran la cima en la industria musical, al ser invitada para formar parte del espectáculo central del evento deportivo visto por casi cien millones de personas y con mayor repercusión en Norteamérica, donde han participado los artistas más reputados del panorama internacional, entre los que se cuentan leyendas musicales como Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, Paul MacCartney y Madonna.
Aunque Shakira Mebarak Ripoll nació en Barranquilla (Colombia), está conectada al mundo árabe por la sangre y el alma. Su padre, William Mebarak, de origen libanés, llegó al país sudamericano a abrir nuevos caminos y, desde muy temprano, vio el gran potencial de la niña con cabello azabache y rasgos de oriente, que a los cuatro años bailó la danza del vientre sin maestro en una escuela de monjas de su ciudad natal.
Su inteligencia excepcional era evidente desde los diecisiete meses de vida, cuando ya era capaz de recitar el abecedario. A los tres años contaba los números, a los cuatro escribió ‘La rosa de cristal’, su primer poema, y a los siete compuso su primera canción, ‘Tus gafas oscuras’, dedicada a su padre, que desde niña la llevaba a restaurantes libaneses para conectarla con sus raíces y siempre la ha acompañado en su carrera artística.

Como la mayoría de las personas exitosas, el camino para convertirse en la estrella colombiana más importante de todos los tiempos y una artista de fama mundial no fue nada fácil. Durante años soportó críticas y la negativa de las personas que no creían en su talento, sin que la desviara de su meta: triunfar en la música y usar su reconocimiento para ayudar a miles de niños necesitados.
En una conferencia de prensa previa al famoso evento americano, Shakira definió su presentación como "una fiesta 100% inclusiva, que integra culturas y diversidad". Precisamente el mensaje que ha transmitido a lo largo de sus 30 años de carrera musical, en la que ha escrito y cantado temas que fusionan todo tipo de estilos, desde el rock y el pop hasta ritmos urbanos, tropicales y sonidos árabes, imprescindibles en sus conciertos y giras mundiales.
De hecho, uno de los momentos más esperados por sus seguidores en cada presentación es cuando empiezan a sonar violines, kanoon, nay, rebaba, mizmar y otros instrumentos del Medio Oriente, mientras la colombiana hace su ya tradicional danza del vientre. Durante varios minutos en silencio cautiva a todos con su mirada fija y el movimiento de sus manos, sus hombros y sus caderas de forma magistral, que recuerda por qué este tradicional baile árabe es uno de los más bellos espectáculos y por qué ella es la más importante exponente de la música del Medio Oriente en occidente. Y quizás también la única súper estrella de este lado del mundo interesada en resaltar a lo largo de su carrera la música y danza árabes.

Cuando su madre, Nidia Ripoll, escogió su nombre árabe, que significa “llena de gracia”, quizás no alcanzó a dimensionar cómo Shakira utilizaría esta cualidad para ayudar a miles de niños que crecen en las más difíciles condiciones. Así se lo prometió cuando a corta edad su padre la llevó a una zona marginal a observar cómo los menores crecían en precarias condiciones y comprobó lo afortunada que era. “Cuando sea una reconocida artista, voy a ayudar a muchos niños en el mundo”, afirmó con convicción. Y así lo ha hecho.
En 1997 creó la Fundación Pies Descalzos, enfocada en apoyar la educación en Colombia y en Latinoamérica. “A lo largo de mi vida he visto como la educación hace milagros. He visto vidas e incluso comunidades enteras transformarse; y créanme, ver que un niño que no tenía posibilidades de triunfar logra salir adelante y obtiene igualdad de oportunidades en su edad adulta es una sensación tan satisfactoria que incluso supera la de ganarme un Grammy”, expresa Shakira en el sitio web oficial de su Fundación.
Gracias a su labor filantrópica, la cantante ha logrado transformar la vida de miles de niños, que han accedido a educación de alta calidad y otros programas de desarrollo integral. Su acción humanitaria ha sido reconocida por organismos internacionales como la Unicef, que en 2003 la nombró Embajadora de Buena Voluntad, la ONU, la Organización Internacional del Trabajo o el Foro Económico Mundial, entre otras entidades a nivel mundial.

Lejos de buscar la fama a través de escándalos, cuando no está en un escenario, componiendo canciones o creando nuevos productos para su empresa de perfumes, la colombiana se ha centrado en viajar por el mundo aprovechando los beneficios que trae su reconocimiento, buscando alianzas y consiguiendo donaciones millonarias para su Fundación, que en diciembre de 2019 consiguió el respaldo de ‘Education Avobe All Foundation”, de Medio Oriente, para beneficiar con acceso y permanencia en educación a 54.000 niños de Colombia.
Pese a los cierres y cese de eventos globales debido a la pandemia, 2020 fue un año agitado para Shakira, que participó en el concierto #GlobalGoalunite para garantizar un tratamiento del covid-19 disponible para todos. Asimismo, lanzó los videos musicales de las canciones ‘Me gusta’ y ‘Girl Like Me’, que en poco tiempo alcanzaron millones de visualizaciones en Youtube y celebró 25 años de la publicación de su álbum ‘Pies Descalzos’, tan importante para su carrera, al ser el primero con el que obtuvo reconocimiento internacional. En aquella época pocos imaginaban que en el año 2020 quedarían atrás los tiempos en los que los hispanos tenían que aprender las canciones en inglés, pues sería el año en que todo el mundo querría cantar en español, como demostraron las estadísticas de los servicios de ‘streaming’ más populares del globo, que evidenciaron un consumo enorme de música hispana como nunca antes en la historia.

When her mother, Nidia Ripoll, chose her Arabic name, which means "full of grace," she may not have realised how Shakira would use this quality to help thousands of children growing up in the most difficult conditions. This is what she promised herself when, at a young age, her father took her to a run down neighbourhood to observe how children grew up in precarious conditions. She realised how fortunate she was and said with conviction "When I am a famous artist, I will help many children in the world,". And so she has done just that.
In 1997 she created the Pies Descalzos Foundation, focused on supporting education in Colombia and Latin America. "Throughout my life I have seen how education works miracles. I have seen lives and even entire communities transformed; and believe me, to see a child who had no chance of succeeding succeed and obtain equal opportunities in adulthood is a feeling so satisfying that it even surpasses winning a Grammy," says Shakira on her Foundation's official website.
Thanks to her philanthropic work, the singer has managed to transform thousands of children's lives by helping them gain access to high quality education and other integral development programs. Her humanitarian action has been recognised by international organisations such as UNICEF, which in 2003 named her Goodwill Ambassador of the UN, the International Labor Organization and the World Economic Forum, among others.

"I think I should use the advantages that come with my artistic career to tell people what the real problems facing the real world are, and I know I should contribute towards finding real solutions. Far from seeking fame through scandals, when she is not on stage, composing songs or creating new products for her perfume company, the Colombian has focused on travelling the world taking advantage of the benefits that her recognition brings, seeking alliances and getting millionaire donations for her Foundation. In December 2019 her Foundation received the backing of 'Education Avobe All Foundation", from the Middle East, giving 54,000 children in Colombia access to permanent education.
Despite the closures and cessation of global events due to the pandemic, 2020 was an eventful year for Shakira, who participated in the #GlobalGoalunite concert to ensure Covid-19 treatment is available to all. She also released music videos for the songs' Me gusta' and 'Girl Like Me', which in a short time reached millions of views on Youtube and celebrated 25 years since the release of her album 'Pies Descalzos'. This album was significant for her career, as it allowed her to gain international recognition. At that time, few imagined that in the year 2020, Hispanics would no longer have to learn songs in English because 2020 would be when everyone would want to sing in Spanish.
